The wide angle of view makes it ideal for shooting panoramic landscapes, shooting indoors where it is difficult to maintain a sufficient distance from the subject, and a variety of other situations.

While taking advantage of the short back focus, two glass-molded aspherical lenses and one UD lens are effectively arranged to achieve both high image quality with high resolution and high contrast from the center to the periphery and a compact size suitable for lenses dedicated to mirrorless cameras. In addition, a lens storage mechanism, the first in the EF lens series, has been adopted to achieve compactness when carrying the lens.
Optimized lens placement and coatings minimize flare and ghosting.

Optimized matching of the AF actuator (drive unit) and AF algorithm on the camera (EOS M) side enables quick AF. In addition, a lightweight focus lens optimized for movies and a newly designed focusing mechanism driven by a leadscrew-type stepping motor (STM) provide extremely quiet and smooth AF not only during still image shooting but also during movie shooting.
- Image stabilization function optimized for both still and moving image shooting
When shooting still images, the camera's image stabilizer provides an image stabilization effect of approximately 3 stops* in terms of shutter speed. (*Based on Canon standards.
